AI4Gov
AI4Gov harnessed Artificial Intelligence and Big Data technologies to drive evidence-based innovations, policies, and policy recommendations in support of transparent, democratic public governance.
The Project
AI holds transformative potential for society, including for democratic governance and public institutions. Recognising this, AI4Gov was a pioneering EU-funded initiative under the Horizon Europe programme, bringing together policymakers, public institutions, legal and social science experts, and AI specialists to explore and realise that potential responsibly.
Over the course of the project, the consortium developed trusted, transparent, and interpretable AI solutions for the public sector, guided by three core ambitions: building AI systems that are accountable and trustworthy; equipping policymakers with tools to develop automated, evidence-based policies; and increasing citizen trust and engagement in democratic institutions and processes.
Throughout, the project built upon applicable legal frameworks, including the GDPR and the EU AI Act, and aligned with the ethical recommendations of the EU High-Level Expert Group on AI. A central focus was identifying and removing bias in AI and Big Data, and delivering solutions that are fair, discrimination-free, and accessible.
Our Contribution
WLC was proud to be part of the AI4Gov consortium from inception to successful conclusion. Through close collaboration with project partners and a firm commitment to ethical principles, WLC contributed to the development of the comprehensive legal and regulatory frameworks that underpinned the project’s outputs.
WLC ensured that AI4Gov’s work prioritised fairness, transparency, and accountability, with particular attention to gender-related biases and their intersection with AI systems. This was complemented by rigorous analysis of the evolving AI regulatory landscape, including the EU AI Act and the broader international context.
Central to WLC’s contribution was the development of a holistic framework for assessing AI technologies in the public sector, examining their impact on fundamental rights, democratic values, and gender equality. This work reflects WLC’s broader commitment to responsible AI governance and its practical application in real-world institutional settings.
